FON and BT Openzone implement landmark roaming agreement

FON and BT Openzone today announce a new roaming agreement. FON customers will gain access to more than 3,000 premium BT Openzone hotspots in UK and Ireland locations.

The agreement rolls out in two phases. From today, all UK customers purchasing a FON Spot WiFi router will have 120 minutes of free access to the 3,000 premium BT Openzone hotspots. A planned second phase will see all FON customers able to purchase FON WiFi credit at highly competitive rates, to work, surf, talk or game using BT Openzone hotspots at locations including railway stations, hotel chains, coffee shops and marinas, plus extensive coverage across 12 city centres in the UK and Ireland.

FON is based on the concept that anybody with a broadband subscription can join the FON Wi-Fi Community simply by purchasing a FON router. The FON router, available in the UK at www.dabs.com, enables FON members to share their internet connection securely with the Community and roam on all FON WiFi hotspots for free in return.

The concept has proved a winner for FON; founded in 2006, the Community recently announced one million members and already has over 400,000 hotspots worldwide. In the UK, customers can join the network by purchasing a FON Spot WiFi router.

Martin Varsavsky, founder and CEO of FON, said "Already, BT and FON have jointly created BTFON, the UK's biggest Community WiFi network. To be able to offer our members the ability to access BT Openzone premium hotspots is a natural next step and represents huge added value to our Community members."

FON customers can access BT Openzone through the FON Spot Wi-Fi router using any wireless-enabled device including laptops, BT Office Anywhere and BT ToGo handhelds and the Sony PSP, downloadable Go!Messenger video chat, voice chat and instant messaging application.
